For a thriller, it’s the slickness and the pace that matters. Otherwise we don’t get to feel the thrills and the movie just falls flat, on all levels. That’s what happens with ‘Asha Black’, directed by debutant John Robinson and produced by Bindu John Varghese.
Asha Black- a name shrouded in mystery. It’s a Facebook profile that’s owned perhaps by the person who has committed a series of murders, in Malaysia. Assistant Superintendent of Police Anwar Ali (Sarath Kumar) and team is on the hunt of this criminal, whose identity remains a mystery. Meanwhile Asha Black sends a friend request to young Rohit (Arjun Lal), who is in India and who is part of a music band, based in Coimbatore. Rohit becomes friends with Asha Black and very soon the identity of Asha Black is revealed. It’s a young girl named Asha (Ishitha) from Malaysia who uses this profile. Rohit and Asha get closer as days pass. So, is Rohit Asha Black’s next target? Would Anwar Ali be able to track down Asha Black? Is Asha the real killer? These are the questions that the film seeks to answer. But sorry to say that despite an almost interesting storyline, the film is far from impressive and interesting. The treatment, the script mars it all...
Performance-wise, it’s only the heroine Ishitha who impresses at least to an extent. Arjun Lal, who was earlier seen in a really good role in ‘Thanmathra’, his first film, doesn’t impress in his comeback film. Sarath Kumar’s character suffers a lot due to bad writing and hence provides the actor with not much scope for performance. Manoj K Jayan should stop doing such roles.
The major issue with ‘Asha Black’ is that at no stage in the progress of the story the momentum is set for it to go the thriller way. The pace is never set and it just sort of goes on unimpressively. The script-writer (in this case the director himself) and the director are to take the blame. Technically too the film is just so so. Nothing much to say about the music and other aspects.
