Ithihasa Review

The story, the makers of ‘Ithihasa’ say, is one that no one would dare believe. Yes, it certainly is different and unbelievable, if we consider the story as such. But the basic premise is interesting indeed. You wake up one morning to find that overnight you have changed from a man to woman or vice versa. Just imagine what would be your plight if this happens to you! Your world may turn upside down; you may go nuts...This is exactly what happens to Alvi (Shine Tom Chacko) and Janaki (Anushree). They just go crazy once this happens to them...

Two small time crooks, Alvi and Vikku (Balu Varghese) happen to get, by sheer accident, a couple of rings. They intend to sell these rings and make a fortune, but when the rings don’t fetch them big money, Vikku throws one of the rings into the sea. That ring travels from there into the hands of young Janaki, an IT professional who lives along with her two friends in a flat in another part of the city. Janaki puts on the ring while going to bed; the same night Alvi too puts on the other ring before going to bed. The next morning Alvi wakes up as Janaki and Janaki wakes up as Alvi; Alvi is no more a man and it’s Janaki’s body that he gets while Janaki is physiologically transformed into a man, with Alvi’s body. The saddest part of it is neither of them had seen the other before and so they don’t know whose body they are bearing. Things get complicated; Alvi and Janaki find it real tough. What happens then forms the rest of the plot.

There is a prelude set in the 14th century that tells us about the magical rings and their power; it’s then that we are taken into the lives of Alvi and Janaki and their story, set in our times.

Well, the film is an entertainer and is just about OK for a one-time watch. The humour element is worked out in a fairly good manner in the first half, but then, in the second half, it’s not that effective.

Shine Tom Chacko is good as Alvi, but it’s Anushree who impresses the most with her performance. Balu Varghese’s Vikku is also good; the others are OK with their roles.

The film would have made for a rollicking full length-entertainer, had the script been handled better. As of now, it’s OK, but there are sequences that may keep the family audience away and the post-interval portion doesn’t work out that great either. The technical aspects are in tune with the mood of the film; music suits the mood while songs are OK.

In short, an average entertainer which could have turned much better with good scripting. Debutant director Binu S anyhow shows promise; let’s wait for his next film!!!
