Thiruvathirakkali staged by 5,211 dancers at Thanima, a cultural festival at Irinjalakuda, near here, has entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
The citation given by the Guinness authorities read:
“The largest Kaikottikkali dance was achieved by Thanima 2015 who were led by Jitha Benoy in Irinjalakuda (India) on February 2, 2015.”
The mega Thiruvathirakkali was staged at the initiative of Thomas Unniyadan, MLA.
Guinness Adjudicator Fortuna Burke handed over the citation to the organisers of Thanima.
Cine actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma inaugurated the event. District Collector M.S. Jaya was present.
Dancer Jitha Benoy Kunjilikkadu led the dance. Rehearsals for the show started a few months ago. Training was imparted for small groups of dancers.
Mr. Unniyadan said that members of different communities took part in the dance in a rare show of communal harmony.
The participants were between the ages of 5 and 90.
The dancers began with an invocation to Lord Ganesa. The participants danced to Thiruvathirapattu, Kathakali padam, Kummi, Kurathipattu and Vanchipattu.
Thiruvathirakali is traditionally performed on the day of Thiruvathira in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December-January).
Women dance to the accompaniment of Thiruvathira paattu. The songs refer to Parvati’s longing for Lord Shiva.
On December 14, 2013, over 3,000 women performed Thiruvathirakkali in Kochi in a mega event.
